White House Supports TikTok Divestment Bill

Press secretary urges Senate to pass the House-approved measure.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre urged the Senate to sign a bill, approved by the House Wednesday, that would prohibit the ownership by adversarial nations of apps used in the U.S. The bill would force TikTok’s China-based company, ByteDance, to divest from the app or to have the app banned in the U.S.

“We will look to the Senate to take swift action,” Press Secretary Jean-Pierre said. “As we have said… this bill is important, and we welcome ongoing efforts to address the threat posed by certain technology services operating in the United States that put at risk Americans’ personal information and broader national security, including through the manipulation by foreign powers of Americans’ views and beliefs.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer did not offer a timeline for a potential Senate vote but said on Wednesday that the chamber “will review” the bill. ByteDance has continued to deny national security concerns and opposes the bill.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Majority Leader Schumer and members of the Senate as they review the measure that would prohibit the ownership of apps used in the U.S. by adversarial foreign nations.
  • For discernment for the president and his foreign policy advisors as they respond to national security concerns.
